The celebrated Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi has been selected as the president of the jury of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). A long time APSA Academy member, Farhdi will preside over the six-member jury in Brisbane in December ahead of the awards ceremony, APSA announced last week.

It is the first time that an Iranian filmmaker will have served as president of the APSA jury. The renowned writer/director is one of the only filmmakers to receive APSA nominations for three different films throughout the seven-year history of the event, and his films have received an impressive ten nominations in total.

“APSA truly cherishes the ongoing relationship with filmmakers such as Asghar Farhadi, whose incredible body of work has grown alongside APSA,” said Michael Hawkins, the chairman of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in a press release. Farhadi became a member of the APSA Academy in 2009 when his film “About Elly” won the Jury Grand Prize and Best Screenplay Award, and received an additional two nominations for Achievement in Directing and Best Performance by an Actress for Golshifteh Farahani. In 2010, Farhadi was one of four recipients of the inaugural MPA APSA Academy Film Fund for his film “A Separation”. The film won the 2011 APSA for Best Feature Film and also was nominated in the categories of Best Screenplay, Achievement in Directing and Best Performance by an Actor for Peyman Moadi. Farhadi’s “The Past” received nominations in the categories of Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the 2013 APSA. Additional members of the jury will be announced in the coming weeks and months. The 8th Asia Pacific Screen Awards will be held at Brisbane’s City Hall in Australia on December 11.
